47 Years of Log Home Expertise: Inside Norlog Building Systems

We recently spoke with Ken Reid about what makes Norlog different, the challenges facing the log home industry today, and the details that truly matter for protecting and maintaining a log home.

Norlog Log Home Experts and Family Owned Business

A Family Business Built on Passion and Trust

In an industry filled with manufacturers, suppliers, and contractors, Ken believes Norlog’s commitment to customer care is what truly separates the company from the rest.

“We are a family business with 47 years of experience in the log home industry in Canada,” Ken explains. “Our passion is log homes, and our primary focus is customer service. We put our customers’ needs ahead of our own. We will not sell anything to our customers unless we would use it ourselves.”

That philosophy has helped Norlog build lasting relationships with homeowners who rely on trusted guidance, rather than just product sales.

What Quality Really Means in the Log Home Industry

When asked what defines quality in the log home world, Ken pointed directly to passion and accountability. “Quality comes from passion,” he says. “When a company and its staff truly care about what they do, they will provide quality.”

According to Ken, quality companies continually research, develop, and test not only their own products, but competitor products as well. That commitment to improvement ultimately leads to products performing better and last longer.

He also emphasized the importance of standing behind products after the sale, something he believes is essential in the log home industry.

Fighting Misinformation in the Digital Age

One of the biggest modern challenges facing the log home industry may surprise many homeowners. It’s not the structure itself, it’s online misinformation. “Google searches can produce good information,” Ken says, “but there are many ‘wanna-be experts’ out there that think they know what they are doing.”

Over the years, Ken has seen homeowners unintentionally damage their homes after following poor online advice, ranging from homemade stains to improper restoration methods.

To help combat that issue, Norlog has adapted by becoming more active in online log home communities, providing detailed educational content and expert guidance for homeowners looking for trustworthy information.

“We’ve started providing expert and detailed information about issues people are having in log home groups, as well as starting our own group for expert log home advice.”

Advice for Future Log Homeowners

Ken shared one piece of advice he wishes every prospective log homeowner understood before purchasing a home, involving a qualified log home professional early in the process.

“All too often I have a customer say, ‘I have always wanted a log home, so I just bought one, what do I do now?’” While traditional home inspectors provide valuable services, Ken explains, they may not always have specialized knowledge about log structures and maintenance issues.

“Having the logs inspected separately by a log home expert is a good idea.”

He also stresses the importance of understanding the long-term maintenance commitment that comes with log home ownership. “Log homes can be a lot of work, and owners need to know what they are getting into. Regular maintenance is much cheaper than restoration fees.”

The Small Detail That Makes a Big Difference

When asked about a commonly overlooked detail in log homes, Ken didn’t hesitate, “It’s chinking and caulking.”

Although some builders may consider it unnecessary depending on construction style, Ken explains that log homes are constantly moving and responding to temperature and moisture changes. “A log home is a living thing,” he says. “As the logs heat up, they expand, then cool down and contract.”

That natural movement can create gaps, twisting, and checking over time, making properly applied chinking and caulking essential not only for aesthetics, but for protection and efficiency as well.

“Seeing a nice, clean, crisp chinking or caulking line (no matter how big or small, inside and out) is a small detail that not only protects the logs but also protects the homeowner’s pocketbook.”

We are incredibly grateful for partners like Norlog Building Systems Ltd., who share our commitment to education, integrity, and long-term quality in the log home industry.
