A Log Cabin Built by Hand, Restored for a New Generation

For Randy and Kelli, the story began when they were looking to purchase a home in North Idaho. Their realtor sent them pictures of a unique log cabin, and they immediately took an interest. They made an offer and purchased the home.

It wasn’t long before they met their new neighbors and discovered something remarkable about the cabin they had just purchased.

A Cabin Built Against the Odds

Their neighbors shared that the original owners, Walter and Myra Kalben, had built the log cabin themselves.

Walter started building the home at the age of 72! Together, Walter and Myra block-and-tackled the entire house using a winch attached to a Suburban. The home was completed in 1981.

For Randy and Kelli, learning the history of their new home made the cabin even more special. But there was also a problem. The next two owners had done absolutely nothing to the exterior of the log cabin.

After years of exposure and neglect, the home needed some serious attention. That’s when Randy and Kelli hired God’s Country Contracting LLC. They gladly accepted the challenge.

Bringing the Logs Back to Life

The restoration was no small undertaking. God’s Country Contracting used Sashco products throughout the project, including chinking, stain, and caulking.

Jeremy described the restoration as a project that demanded their absolute best.

For the crew, that’s exactly what it felt like pulling away from this latest log home restoration.

They put in the sweat, dialed in every detail, and transformed the exterior.

For the finish, they chose Transformation Stain in Brown Tone Medium paired with Light Gray Log Jam chinking. Grizzly Brown Conceal was used to hide the home’s giant checks, creating a finished look that brought everything together. And the results made the hard work worth it.

A Transformation the Whole Neighborhood Could Appreciate

Randy and Kelli weren’t the only ones impressed. For one neighbor, the transformation carried an especially powerful meaning.

The neighbor was the son of Walter and Myra Kalben, the original builders of the log cabin. According to Randy and Kelli, he may have even had a tear in his eye when he saw what had become of the home his parents built by hand.

Kelli said, “After everything the cabin had been through, it had been given a new lease on life. We can’t thank God’s Country and Sashco enough.”

Sometimes, the best restorations do more than restore a home. They restore a piece of its story.
