Backer Rod and Sealant for Log Homes
It seems insignificant, but some sort of bond breaker — backer rod or grip strip or clear packing tape — is the difference between a long-lasting, durable caulking and chinking job and redoing the work year after year. That bond breaker creates the ideal joint design to keep your caulking and chinking stretching properly over time.
Here, we’re going to introduce you to Grip Strip. Grip Strip is a special type of backer rod with some unique features:
- Its trapezoid shape is great for wider chinking joints
- It’s closed cell to be water resistant – repels water to protect the joint from damage
- Like all bond breakers, saves you money – fills the joint so you use less caulk and chinking (which costs more than the Grip Strip)
- Fully compatible with all substrates and Sashco chinking and caulking products
Grip Strip is available in a variety of sizes ranging from 3/4″ wide up to 2-1/2″ wide.
Watch the Grip Strip how-to video below, featuring Sashco’s long-time friend Tracey Hansen. He touches on how to deal properly with difficult knots and other obstructions during installation, as well.
