Alpine Log & Timber Finishes Expert Tips for NEW LOG HOME CONTRACTORS

John Schmitz feature

Every month we feature a contractor, business, or success story. After all, learning from each other is one of the best ways to grow. Up this month: John Schmitz with Alpine Log & Timber Finishes in Golden, CO. Keep reading for more details on how he got started and what helped him succeed.

How’d you get started in log home finishing?

Believe it or not, I graduated college with a degree in physical therapy. I quickly realized this was not the right path for me. So, I moved to Oregon to learn the trade of log home finishing at my brother business. After a year there, I moved back to Colorado and opened Alpine Log & Timber Finishes. That was 22 years ago.

How do you measure success?

We measure success through employee and customer retention. We work hard to ensure our staff has 40 hours of work each week and are lucky to have more business than we can handle. We have several employees that have been with the company for more than a decade. There are also homes here in Colorado that I have been maintaining for 20 years.

What are your biggest challenges?

The weather here in Colorado is our biggest challenge. Snowfall often lasts through May and returns in early November. Trying to fit everything in can be a challenge, and sometimes we have to turn down work because of it.

What’s your advice to someone first starting out in the business?

Don’t be afraid to go to the job. Have an open mind and be prepared to go to some far-off places. You will build your reputation and ability to choose jobs over time.

What’s the future look like for Alpine Log & Timber Finishes?

We are lining up work for next season and are excited for the future.
