WEATHERWIZE’s Expert Tips for Getting started as a log home Contractor

Nate Demers feature

Every month we feature a contractor, business, or success story. After all, learning from each other is one of the best ways to grow. Up this month: Nate Demers with Weatherwize in Engadine, MI. Nate has been in the business of log homes for over 20 years and is the Vice-President of the International Log Builders Association. Keep reading for more details on how he got started and what’s led to his success.

How’d you get started in log home finishing?

I have always dabbled in log construction. I even attempted to build a log home when I was ten years old in the wooded area behind my house. I worked as a framer out of high school and in commercial construction for a while after. It was fun, but I kept coming back to log homes. I have always been drawn to the craftsmanship of log homes and log homeowners are great people.

How do you measure success in your business?

Customer satisfaction always come first. But we also measure employee satisfaction. Restoring a log home is not easy work. When we finish a job, I want the team to look back at their work with pride.

What’s your advice to someone first starting out in the business?

Treat every job as your own and take care of your team. Owning a log home is a lifestyle and log homeowners are good people. Take care of them and they will take care of you in return.

What’s the future look like for Weatherwize?

We are expanding and lining up work for next season and are excited for the future.
