It occurs during the early curing stages when the sealant is soft but has formed a skin on the surface. Heat, usually in the form of direct sunlight, causes the gas to expand. As the gas expands, it pushes the sealant out, creating a blister. This gas can come from water, wood sap, or even the backing material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-82e8c691151ccb5fd2f85aebe02f28e2\" style=\"color:#804515;font-style:normal;font-weight:700\"><strong>What Circumstances Create the Gas?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5f41a6033061d1d35bf8ea69256deaf5\" style=\"color:#804515;font-style:normal;font-weight:700\">Scenario #1 &#8211; Trapped Water Vapor:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As water-based sealants cure, they give off water vapor. Pitch Pockets:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Logs in particular often have what is termed \u00abpitch pockets.\u00bb These are areas of concentrated pitch, or sap, sometimes containing several gallons! (Pitch pockets of 50 or more gallons are known!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This sap (or its vapor) will follow cracks in logs, coming out of the log \u2014 almost anywhere. Avoid application to surface temps that are over 90\u00b0F whenever possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When necessary (70%+ humidity, air temps above 85\u00b0F), protect surfaces from direct sunlight for a few days by covering with a light-colored tarp, cloth, or plastic. Leave plenty of room for ventilation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prime or stain the substrate first.
