Preparing Your Logs
No matter what the maintenance needs of your home, chinking or caulking repair or stain maintenance, you must always start with clean, sound wood. After inspecting your home, you need to decide whether or not you should strip off the existing stain or simply give the logs a good thorough cleaning. The following chart should help you make the decision.

Strip off the old stain if:

Clean the logs if:

  • there are large areas of failure.
  • the product you originally used is no longer available.
  • you don't know what stain was applied to the logs and you need to either repair chinking or caulking, or you are going to chink or caulk for the first time.
  • you want to change colors
  • the stain is in good shape.
  • you aren't going to change stain color.
  • you need to repair chinking or caulking or are going to chink or caulk for the first time and the stain is compatible.
  • there is mildew growth on the stain surface.
  • you are going to apply a light maintenance coat of stain or a clear topcoat.
