Through the Roof!®
Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is Through the Roof made of?
Through the Roof is a solvent-based co-polymer rubber sealant.

  2. What will Through The Roof stick to?
Through The Roof will adhere to fiberglass / asphalt shingles, cedar shakes, plywood, water-based acrylic roof coatings, cement, slate and glazed tiles, asphalt roof cement, and many more. Refer to the usage list for a more comprehensive list.

  3. How long will Through the Roof last? Does it come with a warranty?
Through the Roof comes with a limited lifetime warranty. Refer to warranty details on the packaging, product brochure or technical data sheet.

  4. On the average, what is the life expectancy of Through The Roof vs. asphalt?
Experience has shown that Through The Roof can outlast common asphalt sealants by as much as 3 to 5 times.

  5. Can I use Through the Roof to coat my entire roof? Can I paint a wall with it to protect it from moisture?
Through the Roof is not recommended to be used as a full roof or wall coating. Because it remains somewhat soft and flexible, it tends to attract dirt and debris which is cosmetically unattractive. Also, if it is on a roof that may be walked on, it may become sticky or tacky under the sun, causing you to stick to it. Conversely, in cold, wet or snowy weather, it may become slippery, making it unsafe to walk on.

  6. Is Through The Roof waterproof?
Yes. Through The Roof is waterproof — it repels water immediately after application and for years to come. But, it is not suitable for long-term submersion applications.

  7. Can I apply Through the Roof to wet surfaces?
Yes. Through the Roof can be applied to wet surfaces and has been found to work immediately when applied during a rain storm. Just be sure to use a stiff bristle paint brush, a metal trowel or foam brush to really work the product onto the surface, displacing all of the water. This will ensure the product will stick really well once all that water is gone. Through the Roof will take a bit longer than normal to cure when applied to a wet surface. It is NOT recommended for areas of continual submersion.

  8. Can I apply Through the Roof in freezing temperatures?
Yes. Through the Roof can be applied in temperatures down to 0°F. Ice should be removed and frosty surfaces should be cleaned with alcohol before applying Through the Roof.

  9. How should I clean up Through the Roof?
Tools may be cleaned with mineral spirits or paint thinner. We recommend cleaning hands with citrus-based or waterless hand cleansers.

  10. Can I use Through the Roof on my camper/RV?
Through the Roof is highly recommended for most surfaces on RV's/ Campers. However, it can be risky to use on rubber roof membranes, typically found on RV's. Although it will adhere well, it can ripple or warp the rubber membranes. Cosmetically, it does not look good, but the performance of Through the Roof remains the same. Some RV's / Campers do have polyethylene and polypropylene materials which do not work well with Through the Roof.

  11. Can I use Through the Roof to seal or waterproof canvas?
Yes. Through the Roof brush grade can be used to seal tears in canvas. It may also work to water-proof canvas. To waterproof canvas, dilute with some solvent (say 1 part solvent to 5 parts Through the Roof) and apply. In cold weather, the canvas would get a bit on the stiff side but it would not affect performance. And again Sashco can't guarantee performance as we have not done any official testing on this application.

  12. What solvents does Through the Roof have in it?
Refer to the MSDS for specifics on the solvents in Through the Roof.
